Common causes behind HVAC fires
Although HVAC systems are designed to make our homes more comfortable and livable, especially during those hot summer days, if not cared for, they can become a fire hazard. Since October is Fire Prevention Month, we thought it seemed appropriate to take a look at a few of the causes behind HVAC fires and what property owners can do to prevent their units from going up in flames.
- Overheated motor
Dirt accumulation, insufficient lubrication, and voltage problems can all result in an overheated motor, which if not fixed, can result in a fire. - Faulty wiring
Fraying, loose, or corroded wiring, as well as incorrect fuses, can lead to electrical shorts which in turn can cause HVAC fires. - Overcrowded unit
Boxes, cleaning supplies, and clutter piled up right near your HVAC system can have serious and detrimental consequences because they may obstruct airflow, strain the system, and cause a fiery reaction.
What to do if your HVAC system catches fire
As is the case with any type of fire, the top priority is your safety. Get away from the fire and call 9-1-1 immediately.
Regular HVAC maintenance is key
In order to reduce the threat of your HVAC unit catching fire, regular HVAC maintenance is an absolute must! Not only does it allow your HVAC technician to identify conditions that could become fire hazards, but it also ensures that your HVAC can meet its expected lifespan.
