Whole House Rewiring — Birmingham, AL
Is Your Home's Wiring a Fire Hazard?
If your Birmingham home was built before 1980, the wiring inside your walls may never have been designed for the way you live today. A single circuit that once powered a bedroom lamp now handles a 65-inch TV, gaming console, phone chargers, and a smart speaker — simultaneously. For thousands of homes across Bessemer, Fairfield, Gardendale, and throughout Jefferson County, that original wiring can’t keep up. And that’s not just inconvenient — it’s dangerous.
Whole house rewiring replaces every run of wire in your home — from the panel to every outlet, switch, and fixture — with modern, NEC-compliant copper wiring rated for today’s loads. It’s one of the most significant upgrades a homeowner can make, and one of the most important for your family’s safety.
⚠ Two Wiring Types That Are a Known Hazard in Birmingham-Area Homes
- Knob-and-tube wiring (homes built before ~1950) — no ground wire, insulation that dries and cracks with age. Many Alabama insurers will not write a new policy on homes with active knob-and-tube wiring.
- Aluminum branch circuit wiring (common in homes built 1965–1973) — expands and contracts differently than copper, loosening connections over time. Linked to significantly higher residential fire rates. If your home was built during this period, have it inspected.
Warning Signs
Signs Your Home Needs Rewiring
Not all warning signs are dramatic. Some are subtle enough that homeowners dismiss them for years. Here’s what to watch for:
Flickering Or Dimming Lights
Especially when a large appliance kicks on — a clear sign of loose connections or undersized wiring that can't handle the load.
Frequently Tripped Breakers
A breaker that trips regularly is telling you a circuit is overloaded. It's not a nuisance — it's a warning your wiring can't keep up.
Two-Prong Outlets
Ungrounded outlets mean your wiring predates 1960s safety standards. When it's throughout the house, the whole system needs addressing.
Warm of Discolored Outlets
Heat at an outlet or switch plate means wiring is arcing or overloaded. This is a fire risk — don't wait to have it checked.
Home Built Before 1980
Particularly pre-1975. If original wiring has never been updated, it almost certainly doesn't meet current NEC standards.
Burning Smell Near Outlets
Any burning or electrical smell near outlets, switches, or your panel is an emergency. Call us same day — don't wait.

Our Process
What Whole House Rewiring Includes
As AL Licensed Electrical Contractor #08846, we pull all required permits through Jefferson County or your city’s permitting office and schedule all required inspections on your behalf. Unpermitted electrical work can void your insurance and create problems at resale — we never skip this step.
We work room by room through your home, removing old wire and running new copper conductors to every outlet, switch, fixture, and appliance circuit. We minimize drywall disruption wherever possible and clean up as we go.
Panel Upgrade – If Needed
Many older Birmingham homes have 100-amp panels. Modern homes typically need 200 amps. If your panel needs upgrading, we handle it as part of the project — sizing everything correctly from the start. We also replace known hazard panels like Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco.
GFCI & AFCI Protection installed
Current Alabama electrical code requires GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, and outdoors — and AFCI protection in bedrooms. Every rewire we complete brings your home into full code compliance.
Final Inspection & Sign off
We schedule and pass the final electrical inspection before the job is complete. You receive full documentation — valuable for your homeowner’s insurance and for future home sales.

Common Questions
Whole House Rewiring — FAQ
A panel upgrade alone makes sense when your wiring is in good condition but your demand has outgrown the panel’s capacity — for example, when adding an EV charger or a hot tub. Whole house rewiring makes sense when the wiring itself is the problem: aluminum, knob-and-tube, degraded insulation, or undersized for modern loads. In many older Birmingham homes — particularly those built before 1975 — both need to be done together. We’ll give you an honest assessment of which situation you’re in.
Yes — always. Whole house rewiring requires a permit in Alabama. We pull all permits through Jefferson County or your city’s permitting office and schedule the final inspection on your behalf. As AL Licensed Electrical Contractor #08846, we handle the entire permitting process. Never hire an electrician who suggests skipping the permit — it can void your homeowner’s insurance and cause serious problems when you sell.
Most projects in the Birmingham area take 3 to 7 days. A smaller home with accessible walls may be done in 3 days. Larger homes, or those with plaster walls or knob-and-tube wiring requiring careful removal, take longer. We provide a realistic timeline before work starts and stick to it.
In most cases, yes. We work room by room so power is never off to your entire home at once. You’ll be without power to certain areas each day as we progress. We walk you through the daily schedule before we start so you can plan around it.
Standard homeowner’s insurance doesn’t cover rewiring as a maintenance upgrade. However, many Alabama insurers will reduce coverage or decline to renew policies on homes with aluminum wiring or knob-and-tube wiring. In many cases, rewiring is what makes your home fully insurable — or brings your premiums down significantly.
Very likely, if it was built between 1965 and 1973. That was the peak period of aluminum wiring use in residential construction throughout Jefferson County. We can confirm during our inspection. If aluminum branch circuit wiring is present, we’ll walk you through remediation options ranging from full rewiring to pigtailing, depending on the extent and condition.
Not automatically, but we assess your panel during every rewiring estimate. If your home has a 100-amp panel — common in homes built before the 1980s — we’ll almost always recommend upgrading to 200 amps at the same time. Combining both jobs also saves money compared to scheduling them separately.
Knob-and-tube (K&T) wiring is found in homes built before approximately 1950. Key safety problems: no ground wire, insulation that becomes brittle over decades, and it was never designed for modern electrical loads. Many Alabama insurers will not write a new policy on a home with active K&T wiring, and lenders sometimes require its removal before financing.
